about

After 12 years of backing and recording the saxophone with a number of artists, Bendik Brænne is ready to release his third solo album. His journey into the limelight started out in Nashville 2011 with the recording of his debut album «How to fake it in America”. The album featured some legendary players like Bobby Keys and Fats Kaplin, and it helped him earn recognition as a solo artist, and even earned him a Norwegian Grammy award (Spellemannprisen) in country in 2013. The album was released on Snaxville Recordings with his friends and bandmates Henrik and Amund Maarud, with whom he played the saxophone for six years. In 2014, Brænne and the Maarud brothers, together with Egil Stemkens, recorded and released the second album «Do you know who I think I am?», which was nominated for a «Spellemann» in country in 2015. All songs were written by Bendik and his older brother Mattis.

This record is a Bendix production, and it is the first of its kind. It is Brænne’s first LP to be released on the brand new label, Bendix. It is also the first to be recorded with engineer Christian Engfelt. And it is his first record to have the help and support from Canada’s very own Daniel Romano. The rhythm section on the album is the backbone of one of the world’s finest mariachi death surf orchestras, Los Plantronics, with which Brænne has been playing the saxophone for the last ten years. Together with Larsen (Bass) and Jakobsen (Drums), the Brænne brothers carved out the songs and arrangements for the album in just a couple of months in the early days of 2016. Rehearsing and banging out ideas in their rehearsal space «Caven», a hidden gem at Tøyen, Oslo, the trio then moved into the studio four days in May. All set up and ready to roll, they were joined by organ player David Wallumrød and percussionist Martin Windstad.

With the rawness of the Los Plantronics boys and the precision and dynamics of Windstad/Wallumrød, the result is a unique-sounding album which combines elements from soul, country, pop and surf. The album contains original songs like «Ain’t nobody like me» and «Sunshower», written by the Brænne brothers, but you’ll also find Del Shannon’s song «Runaway» as an opener and closer.

This album possesses an irresistible charm. Hear it for yourself and be mesmerized by the new sound and voice from Bendix. This is the last great country swindle.
